First CRC’s Call to Discipleship
We believe Jesus commissioned his church with a mission
prior to his ascension in Matthew 28:19-20 when he said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching
them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you
always, to the end of the age.”
As we seek to fulfill this
commission and make disciples, we believe Hebrews 10:23-25, gives great godly
insight on where we as a church are called to focus our energies. It says, 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without
wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And
let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of
some, but encouraging one another, and all the
more as you see the Day drawing near.” Based on this
text (and others) we believe this gives us three areas of focus as we seek to
make disciples of Jesus Christ.
Worship
We “hold fast to our confession” of Jesus Christ as Lord through regular
engagement of gathering to worship God through our Savior Jesus Christ in the
power of the Holy Spirit. This means our
primary focus is Christ-centered, gospel proclamation based on God’s perfect
word.
Connection
We connect as the Body of Christ, through unique opportunities that
provide “encouragement” and accountability while enjoying each other’s company.
This can look like studying God’s word, enjoying a meal after an evening
service or celebrating in a park around town.
Building our connection with each other shows the love we have for one
another!
Service
We “stir up one another to love and good works” through regular engagement
in the community God has place us in.
This might look like coming together to pray or engaging in a service
project in Sheldon or beyond. God calls us to be good neighbors as a witness to
the grace he has given us!
Our Mission:
The mission of First Christian Reformed Church of Sheldon is highlighted in Hebrews 10:23-25, Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
